A few weekends ago, the 2014 Tokyo Marathon took place. While the history of marathons in Tokyo dates back to 1981, the official Tokyo Marathon (as it is know today) was founded in 2007 and is one of the six “World Marathon Majors”.
Endurance running is one of the most popular sports in Japan and this particular race is one of the most highly demanded marathons in the world; to the point that a lottery system is used for entry. This year over 306,000 people entered the lottery for 25,000 spots in the race.
Just a few blocks from our apartment is the 10K and the 20K point of the race. We were there in time to see the race leaders pass by; as well as serious runners, enthusiasts, super-heroes, and cartoon characters.
Hopefully, we will be luckier in the lottery next year and be able to join them.
