Snack foods and convenience stores go pretty much hand-in-hand. So, with more convenience stores per block than any other city in the world (unconfirmed; but, highly likely), it comes as no surprise that snack foods are prevalent and popular in Tokyo. What really makes this fun, however, is that like many other things here, the snack foods are very seasonal…at least in flavor. It might be one of those ‘chicken-or-egg’ scenarios; are the convenience stores so popular and prolific that there is high enough volume to justify quick and dramatic turnover in snack food flavors? Or, is it the quick and dramatic turnover in snack food flavors that makes convenience stores so popular and, therefore, prolific?
This season’s flavor, which lasted all of about 1 month, was wasabi. Several different chip companies rolled out their version of wasabi flavored potato chips. The one pictured (Calbee) was my favorite…plenty of kick!
